I have a question about my older Cairn (10) not wanting to walk. She does heel fine, when asked to do so and I give her plenty of sniffing time at the beginning of the walk. Should I try treats to get her moving?

Hi Ruth, I love Cairn’s! I would first make sure she’s not in pain anywhere and any harness or collar isn’t irritating or rubbing her. If you have crossed those off, I would see what happens if you can change your tone to be super excited, “Let’s go!” in a very happy tone and see if that gets her moving. After that treats can definitely help, use them for good behavior and sparingly – such as when she’s heeling and walking. Or if you say let’s go and she moves forward those would be some great moments to reward! Hope that helps❤️

Thanks Nicole. I’ll try the voice a bit higher and more excited. Good idea.
